The RAM 1500 is known as one of the strongest pickups in automotive history, delivering unmatched power, capability, and looks that put other trucks, SUVs, and cars to shame.
But there’s just one problem…
Your RAM 1500’s check engine light has just appeared on your dashboard.
With a million questions running through your mind–like “why is my check engine light on,” “how do I fix it,” “do I need to schedule a maintenance appointment”–we’re here to help you navigate the situation one step at a time.
Keep reading as we answer all your questions about the check engine light on your RAM 1500.
What Does Your Check Engine Light Mean Exactly?
When your vehicle’s check engine light appears on your dashboard, often indicated by the engine symbol with the words “check ” underneath, it is your vehicle’s way of telling you it has detected an issue with the engine or transmission.
The check engine light could remain on or begin to flash. If your RAM 1500 engine light is flashing, it indicates that there is a serious problem and you should be on your way to the closest RAM service center near you for help.
A check engine light could mean anything from a loose gas cap to internal engine failure, so it’s best to remain alert when the light comes on and seek guidance from a certified RAM mechanic as soon as possible.
Common Causes of a Check Engine Light
An illuminated check engine light could be a simple fix or an expensive repair. Here are some of the most common causes of a check engine light turning on.
Loose Gas Cap
Filling up at the tank and failing to fully tighten your gas cap is a common cause of the check engine light coming on. A loose gas cap can reduce fuel pressure and allow fuel vapors to escape, signaling to your engine that there is an issue.
Faulty Catalytic Converter
Your vehicle’s catalytic converter is a critical part of the emissions system, responsible for removing toxic carbon monoxide. If your catalytic converter becomes clogged with debris or begins to fail, it can negatively impact your RAM 1500’s fuel economy and performance.
Faulty Spark Plugs
Your RAM’s spark plugs won’t last forever and letting them go too far past their expiration date can cause an engine misfire. What does this mean for your RAM? Low fuel economy, engine slipping, a major performance lag, or even a big hunk of metal that just won’t start.
Faulty Oxygen Sensor
The oxygen sensor provides your vehicle with air-fuel mixture information, telling your vehicle’s internal computer how much fuel to provide. If the sensor is faulty, too much fuel creates excessive smoke and odor, while too little may lead to engine failure.
Faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor works similarly to the oxygen sensor in that it helps ensure the proper air-fuel mixture ratio to the engine. When exposed to dirt or debris, the MAF sensor could become faulty, resulting in an engine misfire and a costly repair.
What to Do When Your Check Engine Light Comes On
If you notice that your check engine light has come on, there are a few key steps to determine if your vehicle needs some light TLC or a RAM service appointment.
Step 1: Check your gas cap
A loose gas cap is the best problem to have and the first thing to check when your engine light flashes on your dashboard. Make sure the gas cap is tightened and check for any cracks or damage.
Step 2: Did you fuel up?
Using low-quality fuel or the wrong octane level may trigger the check engine light. If you recently fueled up, take note and proceed with caution.
Step 3: Go easy on your engine
Until you can determine why your check engine light is on, or if you can’t make it to our service center right away, tread lightly. Try to avoid hard acceleration, towing heavy loads, or hauling heavy items in the bed. If it turns out to be a serious issue, this could help prevent further damage.
Step 4: Visit a Certified Service Center for RAM Maintenance
When you visit our service center at House CDJR in Red Wing, our team can help diagnose the issue with a diagnostic code reader. By determining the root cause, we can work with you to develop a plan for further repairs and maintenance.
How to Reset the Check Engine Light on the RAM 1500
There are two ways to reset your RAM’s check engine light: using an OBD scanner or disconnecting the battery. While this can be done on your own, we recommend taking it to a professional.
- Using an OBD Scanner
If you have a compatible OBD scanner, connect the scanner to the OBD port and follow the instructions to clear the trouble codes and reset the check engine light - Disconnect the Battery
If you don’t have an OBD scanner, no problem! Perform a RAM 1500 check engine light reset by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery for roughly 15 minutes. While this will clear those trouble codes, it may also reset other settings within your pickup, so keep that in mind before you attempt this method!
After you have reset the check engine light, perform drive cycles to verify that all systems are good to go and that no new issues present themselves!
